Leon (Carnaby St) – Breakfast

Salmon & Egg Muffin

Most of these posts will be about lunches, but here’s one about breakfast. I’m very bad at remembering to have breakfast so I took the opportunity of trying somewhere new as the impetus to make sure I grabbed breakfast one day.

Admittedly a visit to Leon isn’t a new thing, but I’ve never visited one for breakfast before. They have a decent offering of healthy-ish options including porridges, pots of egg & beans and filled muffins. As you can see below I opted for the Salmon & Egg muffin.

On the whole I was pleased with the muffin. Yes, the egg could have had a runny yolk rather than being broken & solid. And, yes the bun was a little floury. But, it was much better than the equivalent fast food muffin you’d be able to pick up from McDonalds and then feel hungry again 20 minutes later.

The filled muffin is rather basic and does leave you feeling the price tag is more about the brand & location than the food. However, the simplicity of spinach, egg & smoked salmon sandwiched into bread is always going to work (assuming you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients). A nice surprise was the dill yoghurt spread onto one half of the muffin – I hadn’t realised it was there and it brought an added layer of freshness to your mouth as well as off-setting any potential dryness from the muffin.

Service is pretty much as you would expect from any McDonalds style fast food setup… your order and money are taken and you stand at one side until you are yelled at that your order is ready to go and you then have to grab the bag before another customer makes off with it – after all, with a limited breakfast menu many of the orders are identical.

Overall impressions – food that fills a hole but nothing to shout out about.

  • Price – £3.75
  • Service & atmosphere – 5/10
  • Taste – 5/10
  • Likelihood to return when back in Soho – In a pinch
