Papaya – Rendang Chicken (Thai Red Curry)

Lots of chicken in this Rendang
I’ve walked past Papaya many times whilst working in Soho and there’s always a queue so it’s safe to assume the food is good, but there is not much visibility of the menu from outside, so a fussy eater like myself wonders whether it’s worth joining the queue. Well if you do then once you’re inside you find a very simple menu stating that most dishes are the same base price if served with basic rice and there are sides like prawn & chicken toast or chicken dumplings that you can add on for a couple of quid more.
The food is all laid out in the standard metal serving pot format and everything looked very appealing with a good range of beef, chicken or tofu in green/red thai curries, non-spicy stir fry and sweet & sour.
There was a sign saying any curry can be made with prawn but ...

Kêu – Roast Duck Banh Mi

Keu Roast Duck Banh Mi

When I pregnant and working in Soho this particular location was still an eatery but not one that I wanted to visit. It was a very different establishment where trays of (dodgy looking) salads were being laid out when I walked past on my way into the office in the morning and were still laid out for people to use as a salad buffet at lunchtime. It looked like a greasy spoon trying out a health kick.

Fast forward past my maternity leave and the trays of salads are gone and the eatery has been taken over by a new owner with a completely different cuisine who has done a complete refit and set up their KÊU branding. I heartily approve of the changes as it now looks appealing and like the kind of place I’d like to try food from… so I did!

Walking into the restaurant was a different experi...

FlatPlanet – Moroccan Chicken Flatbread

FlatPlanet takeaway box
I’m going to start sounding repetitive as there are many places for which I could say this, but FlatPlanet on Great Marlborough Street is somewhere that I’ve walked past a lot and even checked out the menu but never tried.
The atmosphere in the restaurant is pleasant and a bench is provided where people can sit and wait for their takeaway orders. The service itself is a little perfunctory but not rude and there are some very pleasant aromas from the fresh coffee and dough.
The flatbread was served flat in a pizza box which made it a bit awkward to carry back to the office...

Leon (Carnaby St) – Breakfast

Salmon & Egg Muffin

Most of these posts will be about lunches, but here’s one about breakfast. I’m very bad at remembering to have breakfast so I took the opportunity of trying somewhere new as the impetus to make sure I grabbed breakfast one day.

Admittedly a visit to Leon isn’t a new thing, but I’ve never visited one for breakfast before. They have a decent offering of healthy-ish options including porridges, pots of egg & beans and filled muffins. As you can see below I opted for the Salmon & Egg muffin.

On the whole I was pleased with the muffin. Yes, the egg could have had a runny yolk rather than being broken & solid. And, yes the bun was a little floury. But, it was much better than the equivalent fast food muffin you’d be able to pick up from McDonalds and then feel hungry again 20 minutes later.

The...

Fresh – Halloumi Salad

Fresh - Halloumi Salad

Another day, another salad and further evidence that I am a wuss. If nothing else #LastMonthWorkingInSoho is going to get me out of my comfort zone and reading unfamiliar menus within high pressure “give me your order now” work lunch rush hour!

For this lunch I went to Fresh on Lexington Street – another place I’ve been meaning to go but never managed it. I had attempted to visit earlier in the week but backed away after opening the door onto a queue of waiting customers inside – it’s definitely a popular spot.

My lunch was simple but tasty – a halloumi salad with a mix of the 6 different mixed salads made fresh that day and a selection of pickles, tahini & yoghurt poured on top. The five salads I had were: lettuce, carrot & spice, green bean, potato & cabbage...

Mildreds – Salad Boxes

Mildreds - Entire Salad

For the first day of #LastMonthWorkingInSoho lunches I decided to visit Mildreds.

This isn’t technically a ‘new’ lunch location as I’ve been here once before for a lovely sit-down lunch for a colleague’s birthday. However, I’ve never had one of their takeaway salads so it’s sort of ‘new’. I say I’ve never had one of their takeaway salads, but I have been in a few times to have a look before backing out to go find somewhere else less crazy. I find Mildreds intimidating! Before you even get to the food you normally walk through the door to a sea of customers and staff blocking the way – you have to KNOW that you want to get food here as it’s not easy to get a full view of all the food before deciding.

In the window is a lovely display of hot-ish items such as potato tor...

Last month working in Soho (London)

Nikki has owned this domain for a little while, but wanted to start it with a great set of initial posts to get the momentum going. Which obviously means she stalled entirely!

But, now…. thanks to onthenewlondon Nikki has a theme and impetus for a great set of posts….

For 9 months from 2013 to 2014 Nikki worked in an office in the middle of Soho surrounded by gorgeous restaurants, cafes, street stalls, bakeries, etc. For an amateur foodie it was absolute bliss to try many different food stuffs during lunch breaks. However, as a pregnant foodie Nikki was limited by foods on the “MUST NOT EAT” list from the doctor and avoidance of foods that gave her heartburn (basically anything containing tomato, garlic, salt or oil)...
